Description:

Let's discover the most dramatic crossover trek in India!!!

There are several crossover treks in India out of which Pin Bhaba Pass has the most different layers of nature and this is the reason it is considered to be the most dramatic.

Through this trek, you literally transform yourself through two distinct worlds that are completely different in nature. Initially, the trek begins from the most alive lush green Bhaba valley in the Kinnaur region of Himachal Pradesh and will take you to the galactic and resilient Pin Valley in Spiti, which is known as the cold desert in India.

After starting the trek, when you finally reach the pass, will indeed be the most beholding sight one can come across. The panoramic view of the Pin Valley in the shades of pink is the most picturesque view of nature that one can witness. And to its contrast, lies the barren mountains of the Spiti and the lush green valley of Bhaba. And not only this, but the entire trail is straight out of dreams.

The present route of the Pin Bhaba Pass trek was originally a shepherd's route that used to travel between Spiti and Kullu. In fact, this trek will definitely give you the actual essence of Kashmir and Ladakh without even going to these places.

When you step your first foot on the trails of this trek, you enter the enchanting forest of Mulling which will give you the feel of straight out of a storybook. This dense forest which is full of coniferous will make you feel that you are somewhere straight out of a storybook. When you walk through the jungle, the gushing sound of the river flowing beside will indeed be a charming moment to witness. So imagine if you are witnessing such beauties on the first day itself, what does the rest of the trek have in store for you?

When you arrive in Karah, it will give you the exact feel of meadows in Kashmir. And I can guarantee you that the most beautiful spot of the entire trek for camping would undoubtedly be the grasslands of Karah. Another picturesquely beautiful spot of camping during the trek is the river delta of Phutsirang. Now this moment in this trek is actually once in a lifetime experience because the existence of river deltas during a trek is extremely rare and hence it becomes an apt location for camping.

Hope you understand now, why I said in the beginning that this trek is the most dramatic trek in India. Pin Bhaba Pass trek is actually the most beautiful confluence of the Pin and the Bhaba valleys that starts from Kafnu, a beautifully curated small Himalayan hamlet in the Kinnaur Valley of Himachal Pradesh and ends in Mudh, another small beautiful and contrasting village in the Spiti Valley.

Not only this trek has varied and unique landscapes in every part but it also falls in a region that was once a part of the Tethys Sea. Even the trekkers have also witnessed rock strata that belong to a completely different geological era. Trekkers will also witness two distinct cultures during this trek – the beautiful culture of Kinnaur Valley and also the glimpse of the purest Tibetan culture in the village of Mudh. All I can say is that this trek is undoubtedly a visual treat with the coexistence of extremes.

Not only are the landscapes distinct but the cultures are also different from each other. The general lifestyle of the people from both the regions, the structure of the houses, and their livelihoods are quite distinct. As you gradually end the trek, you will realize that the environment has much to do with the communities and culture of a place.

For seasoned trekkers, this trek will definitely be a visual delight. However, this trek is not recommended for first time trekkers as the terrain is moderately difficult. It is always best to have prior experience of Himalayan treks before going for Pin Bhaba Pass.

Many people often get confused between the sister treks Pin Parvati Pass and Pin Bhaba Pass as both the treks are high altitude crossover treks and falls under the same difficulty level. Though Pin Parvati Pass is known to be the more glamourous but if you are looking for a more relaxed trek, then you should choose Pin Bhaba Pass.

Pick-Up and Drop Time

Our journey with Altitude begins from Shimla and our team will pick you up at 9 am from Shimla on Day 1. On the last day, we will drop you at Kaza around 6 – 7 pm. We advise you to night stay in Kaza and make your further plans the next day from Kaza. From Kaza, you can visit Manali via Chandratal Lake or you can go back to Shimla as per your feasibility.

Best Time to Visit

August and September

The months of August and September are considered to be the best time to go for the Pin Bhaba Pass trek. Even in July also this trek is done. However, it is not quite preferable to do this trek in June because there will be a high amount of snow near the pass which won’t melt so soon as it lies in the rain shadow area of the Himalayas. In the daytime, the temperature would fall between 16 °C and 18 °C making it quite comfortable to hike while during night the temperatures drop drastically and go down between 0 °C and -2 °C. So it is advised to carry proper rainproof gear as well as winter gear that will protect against the freezing temperature.

Suitable Age Group: The suitable age group to do this trek is between 13 years and 55 years. Please make sure that the fitness level is best which is a very important criterion for this trek. If you are below 18 years, make sure you are accompanied by your parents or guardians. For people who are above 50 years, we suggest to consult a doctor before going for this trek.

Mobile Network Availability

Mobile networks are available in Shimla and in the base camp, Airtel, Vodafone, and BSNL are available. At Kafnu, only Airtel 4G is available. However, after that, there is no network available. So make phone calls at home from the base camp itself. Once you reach Kaza, you will get mobile and internet services however, it is not at all reliable.

How to Reach

By Air

The nearest airport is the Shimla airport or the Jubbarhatti airport which is 22 km away from Shimla and would take around 50 minutes to reach Shimla by car. However, there are very few flights to Shimla and the prices are also quite expensive. The best is to take flights to Chandigarh as the flight connectivity is quite good from all the major cities in India. From Chandigarh, the distance to Shimla is 120 km which takes around 4 hours to reach.

By Train

The nearest train station is Kalka which is connected to numerous trains from major cities. From Howrah, there is Kalka Mail which is the best option to reach Kalka. From Kalka, you can book the Toy Train ride to Shimla which is simply breathtaking or you can reach Shimla by car.

By Road

The best option to reach Shimla by road is from Chandigarh or Delhi. You can either book an overnight bus or a cab. The distance from Delhi to Shimla is 350 km which will take around 10 hours to reach and the distance from Chandigarh is 120 km which will take around 4 hours to reach.

Tour Plan :

Day 1
Drive to Kafnu

On the first day of our trek, we will start our journey from Shimla (2205 meters) and will drive to Kafnu (2400 meters) by car. The distance covered is 200 km and will take around 8 to 9 hours roughly to reach. Kafnu is one of the most remote villages of Himachal Pradesh and the drive along the Sutlej river through the valley is breathtakingly beautiful. After breakfast, we will start our drive at 9 am sharp. Since it is a long hours drive, it is advisable to start early. Once you cross the Wangtoo Bridge, which is the last phase of the drive, you can finally get an expansive glimpse of the mighty Kinnaur Ranges which is beautiful beyond any description. We will reach our homestay by 7 pm, have dinner, and stay the night there.

Day 2
Trek begins from Kafnu to Mulling

From Day 2, finally our trek begins from Kafnu (2400 meters) to Mulling (3200 meters). The total distance travelled today is 11 km and will take around 8 to 9 hours to reach. After having an early breakfast, we will start our trek amidst apple orchards, the chirping of the Himalayan birds, and the gurgling sound of the turquoise Bhaba river. Since there will be an altitude gain of 900 meters, there will be some steep climbs and you will even see old snow beside the river. There will be several river crossings where wooden bridges are built. By 12pm, we will finally enter the dense Mulling forest which is completely covered with pine, oak, and silver birch trees. After walking through the forest for around 2.5 hours, we will reach vast open lush green meadows. We expect to reach our first campsite in Mulling by 3 pm. After pitching our tents, warm up your body with some hot tea and soups. Night stay at Mulling

Day 3
Trek from Mulling to Kara

On our 3 rd day, we will start our trek from Mulling (3200 meters) to Kara (3560 meters). Today the distance is not very long, only 6 km, and will take around 5 hours to reach our campsite. After early breakfast, we start our trek. The trail is considered to be comparatively easy as compared to other days. There is a river crossing which is a challenge and with teamwork, it needs to be done. The best part of today’s trail are the lush green meadows, the Kara river, and our campsite in Kara is the most beautiful campsite you will ever come across. There are beautiful wild flowers in the shades of yellow and purple scattered all over the meadows. There is a gradual uphill climb to reach the campsite at around 2.30 pm. Pitch your tents and wash your feet in the glacial water. Night stay at Kara.

Day 4
Trek from Kara to Phustirang

On our fourth day, we will trek from Kara (3560 m) to Phustirang (4100 m), covering 5 km. Though short, the trail is challenging with steep climbs and six river crossings. Rocky mountains surround the path, offering breathtaking views. At times, we will traverse glaciers, requiring caution and balance. Beyond the glaciers, the meadows we crossed come into view, adorned with vibrant wildflowers, a stunning contrast to the cold climate. Depending on snow conditions, we will pitch our tents at Lower or Upper Phustirang. From Phustirang, we can glimpse three magnificent Himalayan passes: Nimish Kango Pass, Tari Khango Pass, and Pin Bhaba Pass. Dinner will be served early at 6:30 pm to prepare for the next day’s early start at 3 am.

Day 5
Trek from Phustirang to Baldar via Bhaba Pass

Today’s trek from Phustirang (4100m) to Baldar (3950m) via Bhaba Pass (4865m) is the most challenging, covering 13 km in about 13 hours. Starting at 3 am after a light breakfast, we navigate freezing temperatures with head torches. The uphill climb takes 6 hours through glacial crossings, moraines, scree, and boulders. As dawn breaks, the sunrise paints the snow-clad peaks in golden hues, revealing breathtaking views of Kinnaur, Spiti, and Janglik ranges. At the pass, the 360° panorama showcases the transition from lush Bhaba Valley to Spiti’s stark desert. After crossing the snowy terrain with microspikes, the descent reveals Pin Valley’s unique beauty. Finally, rest at Baldar campsite.

Day 6
Trek from Baldar to Mudh

After an early breakfast, we begin our trek from Baldar (3950m) to Mudh (3800m) and then drive to Kaza (3650m). This final 15 km stretch is relatively straightforward, with a gradual descent. The landscape transitions from lush green meadows to stunning brownish-pink hues, a visual treat. A river crossing via a log bridge offers a breathtaking view of Mudh village, just 5 km away—a postcard-worthy sight. Next, a 30-meter swinging bridge over the Spiti River, suspended between mountains, adds a thrill. A steep 20-minute climb leads to Mudh, a lively village with mountain cafes and homestays. We aim to reach Mudh by 3:30 PM for refreshments before driving two hours to Kaza. Ensure your Kaza accommodation is pre-booked due to network issues.

Day 7
Buffer day to explore Kaza

We keep this as a buffer day to explore Kaza which is the largest town in the Spiti Valley. Being a commercial hub, this place is full of cafes and local shops. You can explore numerous monasteries nearby Kaza, Hikkim post office, and several small hamlets nearby. From Kaza you can either go back to Shimla or you can drive to Manali via Chandrataal Lake.

Guest Speak

The Pin Bhaba Pass trek was truly one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Every single moment on the trail was filled with adventure, beauty, and a sense of accomplishment. The Mulling campsite, nestled amidst lush meadows and surrounded by towering peaks, was like something out of a dream. The journey was challenging, especially the river stream crossings, where the cold water sent chills through my body, but the thrill of crossing them made it all the more exciting. The day we crossed the Pin Bhaba Pass was the toughest yet the most rewarding—the long and strenuous climb tested my endurance, but the moment I stood at the top, looking at the breathtaking Pin Valley with its surreal, colorful landscapes, all my exhaustion melted away. What made this trek even more special was experiencing it with Altitude, whose warmth and hospitality made me feel like I was traveling with family. The delicious food, the guidance of our local trek leader, and the camaraderie with fellow trekkers made this journey truly exceptional. The Pin Bhaba trek was an emotion, an adventure, and a story I will remember forever.
