Description:

It's for nothing that Uttarakhand is called ‘Devbhoomi’.

Not only because of several Hindu pilgrimage sites and close proximity to Mount Kailash but every nook and corner will let you know there is a connection to God, a connection to ancient India.

The Kedarkanta trek is one of the most popular and adventurous treks in India and is located in the Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, India at an altitude of 12,500ft above sea level. This 20 km long trek is filled with pine trees everywhere and wrapped up in white snow, this trek is considered to be the most beautiful winter trek in India. And the best part is you can select this trek as your first trek as well because the easy endurance of the trail is ideal for beginners along with seasoned trekkers.

However, the entire trail is not that easy as well. It goes through diverse terrain with different levels of challenges yet is a visual treat to the explorers. This quintessential high-altitude winter trek in India not only gives you the best snow trek experience with snow-covered landscapes everywhere but will also blow you with a magnificent 360° view of the mighty Himalayan mountains. And all the hard work and challenges are actually worthy of all the efforts.

Apart from its natural beauty, the Kedarkanta trek also has mythological connections. The summit point of Kedarkanta is believed to be the location where Lord Shiva chose to meditate and find solitude. Even the famous spot of this trail, the beautiful ‘Juda Ka Talab’ is believed to be formed from the water droplets that fell from Lord Shiva’s hair and became a pond.

There is another legend that has connections with the Pandavas of the great Indian epic Mahabharata. According to this legend, the Pandavas after winning the war went to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva as they were in guilt of committing sin by killing their own kin. But Lord Shiva was resentful in meeting them and hence transformed himself into a bull and fleed to the Himalayas. However, Lord Bheem recognized him and went after him, hence Lord Shiva divided his body into five parts each falling in a different location. Lord Shiva’s throat fell on Kedarkanta hence the name given which means ‘the throat of Lord Shiva’. Indeed, this trek is full of interesting legends and mythological stories apart from its scenic beauty.

The major Himalayan peaks that are visible from the summit point in clear weather are the Swargrohini Peaks (Swargrohini 1,2,3, and 4), the Black Peak or the Kalanag, Yamunatri Peak, Gangotri Peak, and the Bandarpoonch Peak. Not only this, I can also vouch that one can witness the best sunrises and sunsets of one's life from their campsites during this trek while basking in the delights of nature.

First treks are always special and what can be better if it becomes your first and the finest summit climbs? Such is the beauty of the Kedarkanta trek in India. But please do not get confused with the famous Kedarnath temple in India. it is a 6-day long trek that begins in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. There are hardly any beginner’s treks in India that have summit climb in it and that is why this trek is so special and unique in its own way. Though the summit climb of Kedarkanta is the most rewarding in itself, it is quite difficult as well since it involves a steep climb and is quite tricky near the summit.

But there is one thing I can guarantee, the spectacular and magnificent view from the summit is worth all the toil and challenges you face. The great Himalayan ranges will keep you company throughout the summit. Its an unparalleled feeling completely when you will witness the 360° view of the mighty Himalayan mountains from the summit.

Not only the summit but the entire trail of the Kedarnatha trek is breathtakingly beautiful. Each and every campsite of the Kedarkanta trek has beautiful landscapes and stunning clearings from whichever routes you take for the summit. This trek is done through three different routes and all three have trails through beautiful forests. Moreover, to engulf the beauty of the upper valley of the Garhwal, this trek is the ideal one.

Gaichawan village is also known as the ‘Apple Valley’ in the district of Mori and if you visit there during the apple season, you will see apple grown in the trees. The distinct Kathkuni architecture from Himachal Pradesh has a lot of influence in the houses that is built here with an interlocking mechanism of stones and wood.

Day 2
Trek to Juda ka Talab from Sankri

Early morning, after enjoying our morning tea and breakfast, we will have a short drive of 20 minutes covering a distance of 17 km to Sankri village. From Sankri our Kedarkanta trek starts. From here, the trekkers will be shocked to witness the spectacular views of Great Himalayan snow-covered mountains like Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Kala Nag, and Ranglana. Day 4
Day for Kedarkanta Summit and return back to Juda ka Talab

The most important day of this trek as we have our summit push today. We need to wake up very early in the morning around 3 am to start our trek for Kedarkanta Peak so that we can catch the sunrise from the top. The altitude gained will be 12,500 ft from 11,250 ft and will be 6 km long. You should be completely prepared to trek in freezing temperatures and icy mountain winds that will make your fingers go numb. However, I can assure you that all these toil are worth once you reach the summit point and witness 360° view of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Har Ki Dun. This will definitely be a lifetime moment for you.

After spending some quality time at the summit, we well descent back to Juda Ka Talab. Since we will all be very tired and exhausted, will have early dinner and stay at night in our camps. If you like astrophotography, enjoy every exhilarating moment with nature and your camera.

Guest Speak

It was an incredible experience trekking through fresh snow on the trail. The sight of snow-covered meadows stretching endlessly was truly enchanting. As far as eyes could go, there was only snow. Before we started from Sankri, the road was closed for three days due to heavy snowfall. We were lucky enough to get outstanding snow with a clear sky. Each day began with the magical sight of snow gently falling from treetops, illuminated by the sunlight. Kedarkanta is a very short trek and highly popular for its snow. Without it, the trek can seem rather ordinary. Though we didn’t reach the summit due to heavy snow, we enjoyed every bit of the trek. The most priceless gift of the trek was the tune of flutes from Bansuriwala Baba at Sankri. He has a small maggi stall near the campsite. Do not forget to bring a colourful jacket to get gorgeous photos on the white background. Our memories with those captured photos are still alive in our hearts.
