Description:

Set your footsteps in the world of Ramayana and be a part of this spiritual odyssey!!!

Gomukh Tapovan Trek is a magical journey to the Himalayas and the source of the River Ganga. The most unique part of this trek is that it will make you walk over glaciers for miles and you will pitch your tents at the foot of Mt Shivling – one of the most beautiful Himalayan Mountain peaks. Now you understand why I say that this trek is indeed magical. The thrill not only ends here, but this trek will take you right opposite to the triple-peaked Bhagirathi Massif. I fail to describe in words the adrenaline rush at the moment of this sight. And the icing on the cake is to engulf the beauty of the lush green meadows of Tapovan and get some energy from the magical Gomukh.

According to the legends, during the Treta Yug, King Bhagirath had sent his 60,000 sons with a horse. The horse was lost and the sons went to Kapila Munis ashram who was in deep meditation at that time. When the saint opened his eyes in ager, it burned all of his sones. King Bhagirath who was an avid worshipper of Lord Shiva prayed to him earnestly for the salvation of his 60,000 sons. Lord Shiva listened to his prayers and requested Goddess Ganga to release her holy water that will that will eventually purify the ashes of King Bhagiraths sons. Thus the River Ganga has its source from Gaumukh and is believed to purify every soul with its touch.

Gaumukh near Gangotri is one of the pilgrim routes of the Char Dham Yatra and the Tapovan Nandanvan trek coincides with this pilgrim route. The Gangotri Temple was built in the early 18th century by then Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and since then it has brought Hindu devotees from all parts of the world to this temple. The legendary mountaineering duo Eric Shipton and Bill Tillman discovered this trekking route that connected Gangotri to Badrinath and Kedarnath.

Tapovan Trek is an absolute mountain delight with Mt Shivling all by your side throughout the trail. Apart from Mt Shivling, the mighty Garhwal Himalayan peaks that are visible are Mt Kedar Dome, Bhagirathi Group of Peaks, Meru Peak, Sudarshan Parvat, Mt Satopanth, Manda Parvat, and Sumeru Parvat. So embark on this spiritual Himalayan journey and endeavour to a memorable experience of lifetime with Altitude Adventure Holidays.

You may also visit the local market.

While you take a stroll through Gangotri, our team will gather all the permits from the Divisional Forest Office as the documents have already been submitted before. Day 3
Trek to Chirbasa

From today finally our trek begins with a positive mindset. We get ready and having our early breakfast we start off by 8 am from Gangotri (3415 m) and trek to Chirbasa (3650 m). The total distance covered will be 9 km which will take around 5 to 6 hours. This is a well laden trail that goes all along the Bhagirathi River, then the dense forests till Chirbasa. The path winds through thick forests of deodar and pine, offering a cooling shade and the soothing sound of rustling leaves. Early glimpses of the majestic Bhagirathi peaks (I, II, III) will inspire and energize your journey. Chirbasa, meaning "Abode of Pines," is an idyllic campsite surrounded by towering pine trees and expansive meadows.

Day 4
Trek to Bhojbasa

On the 4th day, we trek from Chirbasa (3650m) to Bhosbasa (3830m), a short yet scenic stretch into Gangotri National Forest. The trail ascends towards the alpine zone, transitioning from dense forests to a barren, rocky landscape. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of the Bhagirathi River gorge and the Bhagirathi group of peaks. Bhojwasa, named after the Bhojpatra trees that once grew here, is an open, barren expanse surrounded by towering mountains. It serves as the base camp for those heading to Gaumukh, offering unparalleled views of the Bhagirathi massif and glacier moraines. Be cautious of landslide-prone areas. The temperature at Bhojwasa dips to subzero at night. Our campsite for the night will be at Bhojwasa.

Day 5
Trek to Tapovan

On the 5th day, we trek from Bhojwasa (3830 m) to Tapovan (4460 m) via Gaumukh (4025 m), covering 10 km in 7 hours. Start early as the glacier crossing is tricky. Don’t miss the sunrise at Bhojwasa with views of the Bhagirathi peaks. A river crossing follows, requiring caution, then a 2 km walk to glimpse Mt Shivling. After 1.5 km on a muddy trail, we reach Gaumukh, the sacred source of the Ganga, resembling a cow’s mouth. A glacial moraine leads to a ridge by the Akash Ganga waterfall, passing sages' huts. The valley opens to stunning views of Mt Shivling and Meru, leading to Tapovan, a beautiful alpine meadow with streams and wildflowers. It’s the most scenic campsite, surrounded by Mt Shivling’s base and the Bhagirathi peaks. For astrophotography enthusiasts, the night sky is a must-see. The night is spent at Tapovan.

Day 6
Exploration day

On our 6 th day, we will spend the entire day at Tapovan and it is considered to be another acclimatization day. Do not miss the magical sunrise in this wonderland over the high snow-capped mountain peaks. If you want you can hike to the Meru Glacier and to the Advanced Base Camp of Shivling. There is also a beautiful alpine lake – Nil Tal around that is worth a visit and has the best view of the Meru peak. Today is actually the ideal day to get lost in the peace and tranquillity of the Himalayas and engulf its beauty as much as possible.

Day 7
Trek to Bhosbasa via Gomukh

On our 7 th day, we will trek back to Bhosbasa (3830m) from Tapovan(4460m) via Gomukh (4000m). Today the route is the same as the 5th day, but today we stop Gomukh, the sacred spot for pilgrims and trekkers. The most exciting moment of today’s trek is the first sighting of the Gomukh Glacier, where the Bhagirathi River emerges. You will be more confident today while crossing the glacier and enjoying the best views of the Bhagirathi peaks. The iconic Shivling will be your constant companion in the downhill journey to Bhosbasa. Our night stay is at Bhojbasa.

Day 8
Trek to Gangotri, then drive to Uttarkashi

On our 8 th day, we will trek from Bhosbasa (3830m) to Gangotri (3415 m). Today is the last day of trekking.
