A trek with a plate full of mountains!!!
Goechala Trek is known to be the trek of a lifetime because no other trek in the Himalayas offers spectacular views of not one but fourteen snow-capped high Himalayan peaks. If you are a trekking enthusiast, then this trek should definitely be on your wishlist.
But not only snow-capped mountains, Goechala trek also offers a lot of other things that attract hundreds of trekkers every year to this place. Situated at an altitude of 15,100 ft or 4600 m, this difficult trek is simply a Himalayan delight for seasoned trekkers. Starting from the deep jungles of the Kanchenjunga National Park to getting close to the Kanchenjunga, the entire journey is nothing short of a fairy tale. And the USP of this trek is that when you actually get a glimpse of the mountain peaks from a short distance, you will be awestruck with the close proximity and life-size of the high peaks that fall on the trail. There will also be a campsite right near the foot of Mt Pandim. So just imagine yourself at that campsite with a bonfire. Can life be better than this for a Himalayan lover?
Furthermore, being a nature lover, how can you miss breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and that fierce alpenglow that would come that would come amidst being in the vicinity of high snow-capped mountains? Trust me no amount of money can buy this happiness. Those high mountain peaks appearing like molten gold during sunrise and sunset is indeed a sight to behold for the rest of your life and to be cherished forever.
Walking through the Kanchenjunga National Park is also another aspect to be cherished. With blooming Rhododendrons during March and April, long suspension bridges, a serene alpine lake with mirror-like water, and a tranquil monastery at an altitude of 3000 m, this trek could not get anything better.
This place also has a rich history connected to it as well. The Goechala trail was first discovered by the British at the time of their colonial rule in India and it was used as a route to connect Tibet to Sikkim. However, the Goechala trek was first opened for the public in the year 1979 by the famous French mountaineer Pierre Noire. Not only this, the area around the Goechala Pass is considered to be very sacred and pious by the indigenous tribes – Lepcha and Bhutia groups for centuries.
Please note that apart from the closest views of the Kanchenjunga range, the Goechala trek also offers the closest view of Mt Pandim.
The trek starts from the quaint Himalayan village, Yuksom in West Sikkim, which is considered to be the previous capital of Sikkim before Gangtok. You will also get to experience the daily Himalayan lifestyle in Yuksom.
On the first day of our trek, our team will pick you up from NJP at 9 am. And on Day 9, our team will drop you at NJP around 5 to 6 pm. So we advise you to make your further plans from there onwards.
March, April and September, October
Goechala Trek can be done only during the Spring season (March and April) and Autumn season (September and October). Both these seasons will offer completely distinct and different landscapes. If you go for this trek during the Spring season, it is full of blooming Rhododendrons everywhere, and literally, the entire forest turns into a beautiful hue of pink and scarlet. Apart from Rhododendrons, there will be so many other beautiful flowers blooming everywhere inside the Kanchenjunga National Park. During the autumn season, the landscape is completely different. Its dark everywhere and the trail is mossy with clear blue sky. In the spring season, the daytime temperature falls between 12 °C and 15 °C and at night it falls down to 0 °C and -3 °C. There will snow once you reach closer to View Point 1 and if lucky you might also witness snowfall after Dzongri. During the autumn season, the daytime temperature falls between 8 °C and 12 °C and at night it falls down to -5 °C and -10 °C. However, there won’t be snow even in the higher campsites.
Suitable Age Group: Goechala Trek can be done between the age group 13 years to 60 years. However, it is mandatory that your fitness should be at its best or it will be very difficult to conduct this trek. For minors make sure they are accompanied by their parents or guardians during the trek. Since this is a difficult level trek, you need to submit a medical fitness certificate from a doctor before going for the trek.
In Goechala Trek, you will get mobile networks only at Yuksom. From further Yuksom, there is no mobile networks available. There might be intermittent connection at Tshoka but that cannot be reliable at all.
How to Reach
Bagdogra International Airport is the nearest airport to New Jalpaiguri which is 14 km away and is connected to all major airports in India. We recommend taking early morning flights or reaching the day before the trek starts. From there you can book a cab or board a bus for NJP.
The New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP) has excellent train connectivity and there are several trains coming from Kolkata. Usually, the majority of the trains reach NJP by early morning. From Kolkata, you can board, Darjeeling mail, Padatik Express, Vande Bharat Express, and many more
NJP is well connected by roads and National Highways are built for smooth connectivity. You can easily reach NJP by road but you need to come a day before the trek starts from NJP. The distance from Kolkata to NJP is 587 km and it will take around 10 – 11 hours to reach.

Trek to Bakhim via Sachen
On our 2nd day, our starts finally. Today we will trek from Yuksom (1720 m) to Bakhim (2196 m). The total distance travelled is 8 km which will take around 8 hours to reach. We start early after breakfast and cross 3 suspension bridges and the famous Tshushay Khola waterfalls. The trail to the 2 nd suspension bridge is quite moderate and easy to walk. Tshushay Khola Waterfalls is a series of mini waterfalls that is very beautiful and after that we have to cross Mentogang Khola and reach Sachen. From Sachen, we will hike towards the forest areas to reach our today’s campsite, Bakhim. Once we cross the Prek Chu river, there is a 70 degree ascent to reach Bakhim. Today we will have our packed lunch on the way. Bakhim is extremely beautiful with blooming magnolias and rhododendrons during the spring season. Night stay at Bakhim.
Trek to Dzongri. Toughest and longest day
On Day 3, we trek 12 km from Bakhim (2196 m) to Dzongri (3970 m) in 7-8 hours. The trail passes through pine and rhododendron forests to Tshoka, a charming Himalayan Bhutia hamlet. From Tshoka, we head north through more rhododendron forests to Phedang, where we rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Next, we ascend steeply to Deorali, an excellent viewpoint for Mt. Kanchenjunga, Kabru, and Mt. Pandim. A gradual ascent from Deorali leads us to Dzongri, our campsite for the night. Dzongri offers breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga and Pandim. The day is challenging due to significant altitude gain, and the night will be very cold, so ensure you’re well-protected.
Early morning hike to Dzongri top, then trek to Thansing
On Day 4, we trek 10 km from Dzongri (3970 m) to Thansing (3704 m) via Kokchurang, taking about 7 hours. Begin early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range from Dzongri Top, a short hike from the campsite. The golden hues of dawn will leave an everlasting impression, and the Dzongri campsite will surely be one of the most beautiful you've experienced. The trail today is moderate, descending to Thansing near the Prek Chu river. We’ll pause at Kokchurang, a serene spot surrounded by dense pine forest where sunlight barely filters through. The final stretch leads to Thansing, nestled at the foot of majestic Mt. Pandim, offering spectacular views. This picturesque campsite promises to be another highlight of the journey. Night stay at Thansing.
A short trek to Lamuney from Thansing.
On the 5th day we will trek to Lamuney (4145 m) from Thansing (3704 m). The distance travelled today is 4 km and will take around 3 hours to reach our campsite. We will start early after breakfast and will reach Lamuney. The trail is easy and very beautiful through meadows that you will thoroughly enjoy. From Lamuney, within 30 minutes of steep climb lies the Samiti Lake which is another USP of the Goechala trek. Samiti Lake is renowned for its crystal clear still water and spectacular views of Mt Pandim through the reflection of the water. If you are lucky, you can get a glimpse of deer who come to drink water from the lake. Since camping is not allowed by the lake, you need to return back to Lamuney. Night stay at Lamuney.
Summit day: Goechala View Point I

Starting at 3 am, we leave our belongings at Lamuney and ascend in darkness, equipped with head torches, to reach View Point 1 by sunrise. Witnessing the sun’s rays turn Kanchenjunga into molten gold is an unforgettable sight, enhanced by the alpenglow over 14 other snow-capped peaks, including Mt. Pandim. This is the closest you’ll be to Kanchenjunga without climbing it, and its breathtaking beauty will leave you speechless. After savoring the moment, we return to Lamuney, collect our belongings, and trek to Kokchurang. Covering 15 km in approximately 12 hours, today promises to be both challenging and rewarding. Night stay at Kokchurang.

Do not miss the opportunity to be in the vicinity of the Kanchenjunga range and Pandim with Altitude Adventure Holidays!!! The Goechala trek with Altitude Adventure Holidays was nothing short of a dream come true. The journey began in Yuksom, a quaint little town, and from there, every step forward felt like stepping into a world of pure wilderness. The ascent was steep and walking was also very challenging with the rucksack. First day we reached Bakhim. The trek had everything—lush green forests, roaring rivers, vibrant rhododendron blooms, and vast alpine meadows. As we gained altitude, the scenery became more dramatic, with towering Himalayan peaks surrounding us at every turn. The story behind Bakhim, Kokchurang was thrilling to me. The trail through deep forest gave me goosebumps. The most breathtaking moment was reaching Goechala viewpoint, where I stood in absolute awe, watching the first golden light of sunrise kiss the mighty Kanchenjunga. The reflection of Mt Pandim on the Samiti Lake was a stunning landscape indeed. Returning from Goechala viewpoint we halted there for photo session. It was not an easy trek—the long ascents and high-altitude stretches tested my endurance—but the expert guidance, seamless arrangements, and unwavering support from Altitude Adventure Holidays made the journey smooth and enjoyable.- Dibyajyoti Deb
